Here’s an exceptional survivor from the golden era of Hawaiian shirtmaking: a vintage 1960s barkcloth-style shirt by Reef, proudly made in Hawaii. Rendered in silky rayon, this rare piece features a centered tapa-inspired tribal band, masterfully screen-printed in warm earth tones—burnt sienna, ochre, and deep brown—on a sandy beige base.
The composition evokes traditional Polynesian kapa designs, with geometric leaf and shield motifs ringed by a zigzag border, giving it ceremonial gravitas. The pattern alignment across the back is beautifully balanced, while the welt pocket breaks the print—highlighting its handmade nature. Close inspection reveals hand-painted brush strokes and natural dye texturing that suggest small-batch production.
Single-stitch construction, plastic gray buttons, and a horizontal buttonhole placket are all hallmarks of midcentury craft. A button loop at the collar adds a subtle touch of vintage charm. Condition is excellent for its age, with no visible flaws—an archive-worthy example for the discerning collector.
